Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1
BBP is an 85-acre (34 ha) park on the Brooklyn side of the East River in New York City. The park has revitalized 1.3-mile (2.1 km) of Brooklyn's post-industrial waterfront from Atlantic Avenue in the south, under the Brooklyn Heights Promenade and past the Brooklyn Bridge, to Jay Street north of the Manhattan Bridge. The site includes Brooklyn Piers 1–6, the historic Fulton Ferry Landing, and the preexisting Empire–Fulton Ferry and Main Street Parks. Two Civil War-era structures, Empire Stores and the Tobacco Warehouse are integrated into the park. Over the past decade, over 1,000,000+ visitors have enjoyed Brooklyn Bridge Park. In 2014, the park welcomed 170,000 visitors to over 500 free and low-cost cultural, educational, and recreational events in the park.View Project
As Kelco has been the landscape organization behind the installation of the Highline, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Lincoln Center Green Roof & Bousque, Governors Island Park & Open Space, MoMA Sculpture Garden and countless other transformative landscapes we have learned a thing or two about logistics and being inventive within the complex urban fabric of NYC Area. Whether it is utilizing barges and marine equipment, or revitalizing a new island park, Kelco looks at landscape construction with a uniquely innovate perspective. Our team has faced it all. We have created our own equipment for job specific needs and our fleet of equipment and resources is some of the industries most innovative and robust.
But it isn’t just a matter of heavy lifting; Kelco has mastered the complex logistics of working in the busy, crowded context of New York City. For many Kelco built -work projects, we obtained the necessary permits, coordinated material deliveries, road closures and safety measures, and has performed work to minimize traffic disruption. Our precise planning enables us to perform work in any condition.
Kelco President, John Kelly, notes that, “As the landscaper, we’re usually the last contractor on the scene, so sometimes we have to play catch-up to ensure that the overall project is completed according to schedule.” Yet the company leaves every job site with a finished look.
Constructing a NYC World Class Park on an Island is no small task. Kelco Construction's rigorous project planning and innovative construction strategies and approach ensured that the modern Governors Island Park Project lived up to the hype and anticipation its users and participants were expecting. Barging all materials to the island and dealing with the ever-changing environments in the area, Kelco Construction leveraged all of its experience and in-house capabilities to install thousands of cubic yards of engineered soils, thousands of plant specimens, thousands of linear feet of irrigation and countless other aspects of the park. All barging and blending of soil types for the first phase of GI Park was conducted by Kelco in collaboration with the entire design team. We went through a rigorous process of soil procurement, barging logistics, installation methods, and blending strategies to complete the project.View Project
Integral to most landscape construction projects is the element of hardscape and masonry craftsmanship that requires an incredible level of proficiency and attention to detail. Kelco Construction has our own in-house masonry and hardscape teams that have laid and built in almost every flat and vertical masonry condition. Because of our experience with all masonry materials and installation requirements, we provide our clients with the unique capability of any scale hardscape and masonry installation.
Grand Army Plaza
In September 2015, Central Park Conservancy and Kelco Construction completed a major restoration of the northern half of Grand Army Plaza. The project involved repaving the plaza according to its historic design, making it wheelchair accessible, and overhauling the drainage and irrigation infrastructure. Existing lamps and deteriorated benches were also replaced with new ones based on the design of the original features, which were installed in 1916. Finally, the Conservancy replaced the trees around the perimeter lost in a snowstorm in October 2011. The plaza now features a new double row of London plane trees, consistent with the original design. And to top it all off, the brilliant gold statue of General William Tecumseh Sherman, sculpted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, also got a touch up. Conservators cleaned the bronze and applied new gold leaf to the surface. Finally, a protective coating of wax — tinted to emphasize the sculptural detail of the monument — was layered on top. Kelco acted as the General Contractor for the project performing all demo, utilities, hardscape, and landscape work. Granite, Bluestone and other hardscape materials were removed, cataloged, documented and reinstalled throughout the Plaza.View Project

Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1
Kelco procured, blended, and installed thousands of cubic yards of engineered and specific soil types for the entire Brooklyn Bridge Park. We custom made our own soils, blending and installation process and material to complete the demands of the project. Ecological and biological measures and strategies where employed throughout the park, which is an integral part of the health and success of all soils and plant material used. A full blending onsite facility was created specifically for the project and with our in-house soil experts, Kelco, along with the design team and all parties involved with the project, created an industry benchmark for soil procurement, blending, installation and maintenance.View Project
